A2L transition · verified sources · 2026

The A2L transition is not a refrigerant problem. It is a business problem.

New refrigerants, shrinking R-410A supply, price volatility, and changing rules all land in the same place: your pricebook, inventory, training, sales conversation, and profit.

What actually changed — without the panic

The AIM Act directs EPA to phase down HFC production and imports 85% by 2036. New residential and light-commercial systems manufactured or imported since January 1, 2025 must use refrigerants below 700 GWP: R-454B or R-32. On May 26, 2026, EPA eliminated the installation deadline for legacy R-410A systems built or imported before 2025. Remaining legacy inventory is sellable and installable again.

The transition timeline every owner should have on the wall

December 2020: AIM Act becomes law. January 2024: allowances fall to 60% of baseline. January 2025: new systems move to A2L. 2025: R-454B shortages and price hikes land on job costs. May 26, 2026: EPA removes the legacy installation deadline. January 2029: allowances fall to 30% of baseline.

What the 2025 R-454B shortage taught every HVAC owner

Demand outran forecasts by 5 to 10 times. Contractors resorted to workarounds manufacturers refused to endorse. Honeywell alone announced increases of 15% in February, 8% in March, then a 42% surcharge in April plus $4 per pound. The structural lesson is permanent: during a transition, refrigerant behaves like a commodity market and your pricing system has to be built for volatility.

The five business impacts nobody prices in

Your pricebook has a shelf life now, inventory became a strategy, the repair-versus-replace conversation changed twice, training is a liability line rather than a luxury, and cash flow feels the equipment price climb. Reprice quarterly, manage both refrigerant ecosystems, retrain the sales conversation, document A2L handling, and tighten collections.

The owner’s A2L playbook

Reprice the book. Audit legacy inventory. Separate R-410A service stock from A2L install stock. Schedule A2L training with sign-offs. Update repair-versus-replace scripts. Build deposits and financing into the proposal. Ask your distributor for lead times and written availability. Make the transition a managed operating process, not a seasonal scramble.

The next right step

Run the transition. Don’t let it run you.

Build the price, inventory, training, and cash systems that keep a refrigerant transition from becoming a margin transition.
